Meet Buddy
Buddy was real.
He was a wild mockingbird who lived on the telephone wire outside my 1962 house in Paradise Palms, Las Vegas, during one of the loneliest years of my life. I said “Hey Buddy” to him every morning. Then one day he tapped on my bathroom window. I tapped back, and that was it: he’d decided I was his.
After that he met me at the front door, followed me down the street on the wires, chased the pigeons off my seed and kept a stash of my blueberries on the roof. He never asked permission for any of it.
Mockingbird is my way of passing that on. Sometimes the thing that gets you through is a small, daily hello from someone who didn’t have to show up.
